San Diego Haunted Houses, Scare Trails & Ghost Tours for Adults in 2026

Four friends beside The Haunted Amusement Park sign and an illuminated Ferris wheel at night.

For a group Halloween outing, choose The Haunted Amusement Park for an actor-filled scare trail, Fort Cross Haunted Harvest for a creepy country hayride, or Whaley House, Hotel del Coronado and Davis-Horton House for historic ghost stories and paranormal-themed tours. Pick one experience that suits your friends, then make SideBar your Halloween night finale on a matching party date.

These five stops deliver different kinds of spooky. The experience descriptions below are editorial guidance based on each venue’s advertised activities, not a tested ranking of which is “scariest.”

The Haunted Amusement Park: a scare trail in El Cajon

Choose this one when your group wants live actors, surprise scares and a longer outdoor walk. The attraction uses the former Marshal Scotty’s Playland setting for a mile-long route with animatronics, old amusement rides, a blacklight maze and a spinning vortex tunnel. The trail takes about 30 minutes to walk; allow additional time for the queue.

  • Location: 14011 Ridge Hill Road, El Cajon.
  • Price: General admission starts at $25 and varies by night. FastPass costs $15 above general admission; VIP front-of-line admission costs $25 above general admission. Credit-card payments add $3.99 per ticket to the advertised cash price.
  • Scare style: High-intensity theatrical scares, darkness, loud effects, fog and strobes.
  • Plan ahead: Wear closed-toed shoes. A general-admission time slot is your arrival time to join the line, not a guaranteed trail-entry time. Onsite parking is free.

Read the trail overview, ticket options and visitor rules, then choose an operating night from the official schedule. Save drinks for afterward: alcohol and intoxicated visitors are prohibited.

Fort Cross Haunted Harvest: a spooky country outing near Julian

Fort Cross suits friends who want ghost stories and a rural Halloween atmosphere with activities before the scares. Haunted Harvest combines jug-band music, a hoedown and the “Curse of Clementine” haunted hayride. The venue describes the hayride as subtle and creepy; part of the experience involves getting off and walking through dark woods.

  • Location: 4425 Highway 78, Santa Ysabel, in the Julian area.
  • Price: $30 per person.
  • Schedule: Selected October nights, with reservation times at 7:30 and 8 p.m.
  • Scare style: Creepy storytelling and outdoor suspense.
  • Plan ahead: Prepaid reservations and a signed liability waiver are required. Food is not provided.

Check the Haunted Harvest details and reservation link for your date. Treat this as a mountain-area evening outing: leave generous time for the return drive before committing to a second reservation downtown.

Whaley House: an evening of Old Town ghost stories

For friends who prefer an eerie historic setting, choose the Whaley House Evening Guided Tour. The approximately 30–40-minute visit covers the house and grounds through the family’s history, legends and reported hauntings.

  • Location: 2476 San Diego Avenue, Old Town.
  • Price: Evening guided tours are advertised from $20; check the selected date’s price.
  • Scare style: Atmospheric storytelling in a historic house.
  • Plan ahead: Reservations are required, with check-in 20 minutes before the tour. Expect low lighting, flickering lights, stairs and uneven surfaces.

Book the Evening Guided Tour. The ticket overview also lists other experiences, including a separate after-hours paranormal investigation; choose the product your group actually wants.

Hotel del Coronado: The Paranormal Tour

The Del’s Paranormal Tour focuses on the story of Kate Morgan and reported unexplained events at the hotel. This 70-minute guided experience includes her actual guestroom and the use of paranormal-investigation equipment.

  • Location: 1500 Orange Avenue, Coronado; the listed meeting location is the Ice House Museum at the resort’s south entrance.
  • 2026 dates: October 17 and 23.
  • Listed price: $77.25 per participant; review the final booking total.
  • Scare style: Guided investigation and historic mystery.
  • Plan ahead: Reserve this specific product. The hotel’s Room 502 Tour and Haunted Happenings Tour are separate experiences.

Use the official Paranormal Tour booking page to select a date and session. These dates do not overlap SideBar’s October 28, 30 and 31 Halloween parties, so plan this as a separate October outing.

Davis-Horton House: a daytime Haunted Adventure in the Gaslamp

Want a spooky activity without committing your whole evening? The Davis-Horton House’s Self-Guided Haunted Adventure includes museum admission, a pamphlet about the house’s ghostly legends and use of an EMF meter. The museum lists an average visit of 15–30 minutes.

  • Location: 410 Island Avenue, Gaslamp Quarter.
  • Adult price: $12.
  • Schedule: Thursday through Saturday, with tour purchases from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; the museum closes at 4 p.m.
  • Scare style: A self-paced historic-house visit with paranormal-themed exploration.
  • Group detail: This tour is limited to six guests at a time.

Choose the Self-Guided Haunted Adventure, rather than general admission or a neighborhood walking tour. Its daytime schedule leaves room for dinner and a later Halloween party. Ghost stories and EMF readings should not be treated as proof of paranormal activity.

Make the group plan work

  • Choose one main attraction. El Cajon, the Julian area, Old Town, Coronado and the Gaslamp are separate destinations, not a convenient five-stop evening route.
  • Book the whole group into the same session. Check capacity before everyone buys separately, particularly at Davis-Horton House.
  • Leave room for queues, travel and dinner. An attraction’s tour length does not include every part of the outing.
  • Check clothing and access requirements. Trail footwear may differ from your nightclub outfit. Ask the attraction directly about mobility or sensory accommodations.

Wrap up Halloween at SideBar

When the scares are over, keep the group together and finish Halloween at SideBar, 536 Market Street in the Gaslamp Quarter.

  • Wednesday, October 28: Industry Halloween Party; guestlist registration.
  • Friday, October 30: BITTEN with Kevin Kon; ticket and table options.
  • Saturday, October 31: BITTEN with DJ Crooked; ticket and table options.

SideBar’s Halloween events are 21+ with valid ID. Costumes and elevated attire are encouraged. Guestlist registration, tickets and VIP reservations have different terms; select the option for your actual party date.
